My midlife mom friends—if you’ve ever needed a vacation after your family vacation, I see you.

In this week’s mini-sode, I’m reflecting on our recent family trip—and why it finally felt a little bit more like an actual vacation. There were still early wake-ups and some BIG feels, but there were also breakthroughs.

Here’s what I learned (and relearned) about family travel in midlife:

Claim the Single Seat

If you’re traveling with a partner, don’t be afraid to engineer the seating situation in your favor. That extra bit of aisle space — and distance from the constant snack requests — can do wonders for your nervous system.

Bring Entertainment That Doesn’t Glow

My kids are screen-free—yes, even on 5 hour flights—and Yoto players have been a total game changer. They can listen to all kinds of audiobooks and music — giving them independence and giving me a moment to breathe.

Choose the Hotel with the Kids’ Club and the Spa

If you can swing it, book the place with both. A few hours of guilt-free downtime for the adults (and art projects and adventures for the kids) can transform the whole trip.

Notice the Growth

Whether it’s reading 90 pages on a flight or realizing your kid can finally ride the escalator solo, celebrate how far you’ve come. These little milestones are huge when you’re in the thick of parenting young kids.

Carpe Diem

Take advantage of where you are. Step far outside the normal routine (which, yes, exists for a reason AND can be so monotonous). Sometimes the best moments come when we ditch the plan and just go for it.

So whatever stage you’re in — toddlers, teens, or somewhere in between — be present for the small wins. Feel the joy that’s happening right now. And remember: you’re doing a great job.
